Fun with Flipper
As National Dolphin Day approaches (April 14), we look to the sea for signs of our marine mammal friends. Luckily, we don’t need to look far. With miles of coastline along the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, the waters of Virginia Beach are a porpoise playground that is begging to be explored.
Dolphins are never far away from our three beaches, especially around sunrise and sunset. Keep an on eye on the horizon, and you’re bound to see a few rounded fins skimming the surface. The best way to experience dolphins, however, might be to get out on the water with them. Head to the harbor at Rudee Inlet, where the seafaring options are endless. Hop aboard one of our many popular boat tours and watch the wake as dolphins race to keep pace. Or, for an even closer look, get right down on the water on a sit-on-top kayak or stand-up paddle board, from Chesapean Outdoors.
With large groups of dolphins often ambling off of our coast, sightings are practically guaranteed. Whether by beach, board or boat, opportunities abound to see these graceful creatures in Virginia Beach.
